Fitness Trend Predictions for 2019

By Robert Schinetsky

With the new year comes the debut of hundreds of new supplements, training programs, and fitness fads.

What fitness trends should you look for in 2019 and which of the “old guard” from 2018 will still be going strong in the new year?

Let’s find out!

Work and Training Continue to Merge

Adults are busier than ever these days, driving farther to get to work, responding to calls, text, and emails at all hours of the day, and still finding time to spend with the family. Now, thanks to the advances in modern technology, we can work pretty much anywhere -- home, the local coffee shop, and yes, even the gym.

Going into the new year, expect more of the big box, globo gyms to add more areas where people can plug in their laptops and work (hopefully after training). On the flip side, you can also expect more corporations to incorporate onsite fitness facilities so that their workers don’t have to deal with the hassle of running out to the gym during their lunch hour to squeeze in a quick workout.

And, while we’re not saying this isn’t going to happen anytime soon, it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to start having some “pre meeting warm ups” where everyone gets together and does a few circuits of bodyweight exercises before heading into a big brainstorming session.

Even More Streaming

Peloton revolutionized the fitness industry by bringing high-tech spin classes right to your home with streaming live classes, sleek hardware, and the ability to integrate into your favorite fitness. Basically, with Peloton, you can experience all the thrill, excitement, and sweat of a top-notch spin class without ever having to leave the comfort of your home.

Heading into 2019, expect this trend to continue and see the same type of experience ported to other type of cardio machines, including rowing machines, treadmills, stair steppers, ellipticals, and more.

For those that enjoy the group dynamic of training, but don’t always have the desire to go to a class in person, streaming classes is prime choice.

And, there’s no shortage of streaming options to choose from, either. Peloton is just one of many. Another popular streaming service that’s relatively new is FIIT TV that allows you to join a class in real time.

Another perk of various streaming services (including FIIT) is that you get a chest strap with built-in heart rate monitor and accelerometer so that you can track your progress during the class.

HIIT Fusion

Several years back, high intensity interval training (HIIT) took the workout world by storm and finding all manner of workouts calling themselves HIIT was a breeze.

The prospect of getting the same calorie burn as an hour on the treadmill in a fraction of the time clearly resonated with a public that has struggled to find the motivation to exercise, and HIIT was the solution to get everyone moving.

Going forward, HIIT will remain a big player in the fitness sphere, but it will undergo a transformation of sorts -- HIIT will now mix with other flexibility-based fitness classes. Expect to see classes such as HIIT Pilates and HIIT Yoga. These classes bring all the benefits of traditional HIIT training (boost metabolism, increase fat burning, etc.) while adding in elements to lengthen, strengthen, and increase the flexibility of your muscles and reduce stress.

Rowing is the New Spinning

Boutique fitness studios and gyms have been on the rise the past few years. One need only look at the surge in popularity of places like Spin Studios, BXR, and others for proof that the aesthetics of where a person trains and the “vibe” the environment gives off is important to potential clients.

Expect this trend to continue into 2019, but in addition to spinning and boxing, expect to see another type of boutique pop up -- glamourous rowing studios. This staple of the Crossfit community will get a serious makeover and take its place amongst standalone workouts in trendy locales.

Specialization is the name of the game in 2019, as companies will seek to differentiate themselves from other facilities in order to attract a specific clientele. In an effort to compete with the small studios, big box gyms will continue to offer more and more specialized services and programs, to accommodate an ever more discerning customer.

Keto Continues to Grow

For decades, fat was viewed as something to be feared and that consuming too much would lead to everything going completely wrong from a metabolic point of view.

These days, the mass phobia of fat has passed and numerous research trials have been published showing that not only is fat not bad for us, it’s actually incredibly good for us. From this knowledge came a radical uptick in the popularity of low carb and ketogenic diets over the past 2 years.

In fact, ketogenic diets and Intermittent Fasting (IF) were two of the most popular diets of 2018 adopted by those seeking to finally get serious about their health and wellness. Quite frequently, individuals combined the two ways of eating as keto dieting by nature helps suppress hunger, which is good because if you’re following traditional intermittent fasting, you’re only allowed to eat during a brief 8 hour window each day.

Fully expect these two forms of eating to continue to dominate the diet landscape into 2019, bolstered by the increased popularity of things such as Bulletproof coffee, bone broth, and BHB salts.

2019 is sure to be another banner year for the fitness industry and there’s sure to be a couple surprises waiting for us all.
